What we do
The Community Workshop is a unique venture, a commercial print business based on Moreton Hall Industrial Estate which also offers work-based experience to adults with disabilities and those who are furthest from the job market.
Director Andrew Akehurst originally ran the print shop in Social Services at Suffolk County Council. When that facility was closed at the end of 2014, he seized the opportunity to continue a valued local service and started Community Workshop. Side by side with the commercial business Andrew offers his print finishing, craft and music studio services to attendees.
Our therapeutic service is based on the principle that everyone needs to be empowered to work. The activities we offer are designed to be interesting and engaging. The feeling of self-worth achieved by working is very important in terms of social accounting.
The commercial print shop handles general print needs from business stationery to parish magazines On the therapeutic side a typical day might see attendees put together packages of crafting materials, up-cycle waste from the local community and offer it for sale in the on-site craft and resource shop. In the afternoon craft projects are completed and there’s the opportunity to join in a music session using the large variety of musical instruments on offer in the music room.
The service is open 5 days a week from 9am – 3pm.
The service charge is £33 (+ VAT if applicable) per day. Everybody is welcome to come for a few taster days to see if it’s what they would like to do, equally any parents, carers or friends can come along too.
