What we do
The Community Workshop is a unique social enterprise. We run a printing business alongside providing work-based experience to adults with disabilities and those who are furthest from the job market. Alongside the opportunities within the printing business we offer craft and music based activities.
Director Andrew Akehurst founded Community Workshop out of a need for high quality provision in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk for individuals with learning disabilties. Community Workshop offers print finishing, craft and music studio services to attendees.
Our therapeutic service is based on the principle that everyone needs to be empowered to work. The activities we offer are designed to be interesting and engaging. The feeling of self-worth and improved confidence is very important to the beneficiaries of our services.
The printing business handles general print needs from business stationery to parish magazines. This is where we provide our work based learning. On the therapeutic side a typical day might see attendees participating in activities such as music workshops, arts and crafts or project work for example building a Romany wagon (Vardo).
The service is open 5 days a week from 9am – 4pm.
The service charge is £40 + VAT per day. Everybody is welcome to come for two taster days to see if it’s what they would like to do, equally any parents, carers or friends can come along too.
